What is a Transesophageal Echocardiogram?

A transesophageal echocardiogram is a procedure that is performed exclusively in a hospital setting. It is a relatively simple test that allows the doctor to view the heart using a miniature ultrasound device integrated with a flexible tube, which is passed from the mouth down the esophagus into the stomach. This test is not painful and does not interfere with breathing. The test is performed under mild sedation after local anesthesia is applied to the back of the throat using a spray. Blood pressure and oxygen levels are monitored throughout the procedure.

When is a Transesophageal Echocardiogram necessary?

This test is typically performed to assess signs and symptoms that may indicate the following conditions: atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, heart failure, aneurysms, heart valve disease, heart tumors, infective endocarditis (heart infection), aortic dissection (tear in the wall of the aorta), blood clot detection, and stroke. For some patients with known valve disease, a transesophageal echocardiogram is essential for diagnosis and for planning the most appropriate treatment in for patients with valve diseases requiring catheterization or surgery.
